Why are there barcodes everywhere I turn?

This is a QR code, short for quick response.  If you are one of the quarter (and growing daily) americans who use a smart phone these are for you!

QR codes originated in Japan and were first used to track automotive parts.   Now you may feel like you see them everywhere you turn!

You might see them on shelves at stores, Best Buy is adding them in all of their stores.  You will see them on business cards and flyers, even on For Sale signs in yards around the country!  To celebrate “internet week” in June New York’s Time Square was covered in giant QR codes promoting the sights on the city.

Using a special app you can scan this code with your phone and it will direct you to a website or more information on the product/ person/ property.   If you see one of our for sale signs or brochures there will be a QR code, if you scan it you will go directly to that property on our website where you can take a virtual tour.  All while you are sitting right out front of the home!

Smarter Parking Coming to Downtown Minneapolis

There is a new “smart” way to park in Downtown Minneapolis!  These photos were taken this morning in front of Monte Carlo in the Warehouse District.  46 of these meters will be installed this year, servicing 450 parking spots.  According to the city of Minneapolis 200 meters will be added in 2011 and in 2012.  When completed about 75% of the city’s 6,800 metered spaces will use these new machines.  Here is a map showing where the new meters are to be functional by the end of the month.  multi_space_map

Pros of the new meters:

*No more searching for quarters in your purse or pockets or under your floor mats.  All you need is your credit/ debit card (there are going to still be some less used meters that will be replaced, but by a system that still only takes coins)

*During busy times or “rush hour” some metered spaces are tow away zones.  The new system can alert you to this when you park so you will know what time you need to move by.

*Solar powered!

*More cost effective for the city.  It utilizes the city’s wifi network to send reports to traffic control.  Also the coins will need to be emptied less frequently

*One of the more interesting features is you can add time to your meter from any other meter.  Say you had to park 5 blocks away because there were no spots in front of your destination.  Your meeting is going to go 30 minutes over.  Instead of walking 5 blocks to add time you can go to the meter right outside your meeting and add time by entering your meter number (is located on your receipt)

*It gives you a receipt.  Great if you need to be reimbursed or keep for tax purposes!

Cons of the new meter system:

*No more plugging the meter.  It won’t let you add more time than the maximum even if you go back when your time is almost out.  This could be a con for some people, but could also be seen as a good thing!  If you need more time than the meter allows you better use a ramp.

*Technology is great, except when it doesn’t work right.  Hopefully this won’t turn out to be an issue

*It will be much easier for the city to raise parking rates!  They can also change the price for different times during the day.  This could confuse some people

*With it being more cost effective and automated I would imagine at least one person lost their job

*Two of the most prominent second languages spoken in the metro, Hmong and Somali, are not included in the current meters.  It currently has information in Spanish, French, and German.  The latter two may be replaced next year with Hmong and Somali.

Wow, who knew that parking information could be so exciting!

3M Photo Shoot

There was excitement this week at our Cobalt Listing.  Location scouts from local company, Unleashed Productions, felt it would be the perfect place for a photo shoot they were doing for a 3M product.  Below is a slideshow of what goes on behind the scenes, very interesting!  It is unbelieveable how many people are needed in order to get that one photograph that will be used in the ad.
